Questions before purchase?

Here are answers to the questions our customers most often ask us before purchase.

01 How are the CALs installed?

CALs are installed online through Remote Desktop Licensing Manager, using the license details in your delivery document. A step-by-step guide is included with every order.

02 Can I switch between User and Device CALs?

Yes — within 60 days of purchase you can switch between User and Device CALs directly from your account, or contact us and we'll handle it for you. The switch is free, and your updated license document is delivered right away. (One switch per order.)

03 Is the Windows Server operating system included?

No. An RDS CAL is an access license for Remote Desktop Services — it licenses users or devices to connect to your server, but does not include the Windows Server operating system itself. The Windows Server needs to be licensed separately.

04 Can I use the CALs in my country?

Yes. RDS CALs are not region-locked — they can be deployed on Windows Servers located anywhere in the world, whether on-premises or on dedicated cloud servers.

05 Do the CALs expire or need to be renewed?

No. These are perpetual licenses — there are no monthly or annual renewals, and they never expire.

06 Can I reuse my CALs after a server reinstall or migration?

Yes. Your RDS CALs can be reactivated after a reinstall, and transferred to a new server when you replace your hardware. Just make sure the licenses are only active on one server at a time — once the old server is retired, activate them on the new one.

07 Can I add these CALs to my existing CALs?

Yes. The new CALs are installed as an additional license pack on your RD Licensing Server and are added to your existing pool, regardless of where the original CALs were purchased. Make sure the type (User or Device) and version match your existing deployment.

2022 Popular choice Fits most current estates, with room to fall back to 2019 or 2016.
2025 2022 2019 2016
2019 Established servers For settled 2019 environments that may still run some 2016 hosts.

Upgrading your server OS later? Buy the CAL version for the server you’re moving to — it covers your current one in the meantime, so you don’t repurchase after the upgrade. Rolling back to an older server? Your existing CALs already cover it; downgrade rights work automatically and need no exchange.
